This photoessay is a personal piecing together of some afterthoughts on growing up in a turbulent home. I like to think of this as a work of post-memory due to the nature of rememberings that it tries to capture, of its multiplicities. Memory has a contested place in my family, with forgetfulness playing a constant role as we continue along our daily lives. Identifying this photoessay as a work in progress, this is an attempt to bring out some themes that have revisited me, while closure is something I no longer (actively) seek. This work is of a fragmentary nature that tunnels back and forth through the past and present.
‘Home’ is also a constantly (d)evolving sense of space, time and place, as we situate ourselves and each other awkwardly, affectionately, through small gestures and repetition. Today, we forge new memories after the fact of traumas passed, and continue to look behind our shoulders but beyond, too.
Overwhelmed. Hard hitting, expressed beautifully.
Keep up the excellent work Sukanya Deb.
